This shoot with Tye (a black labrador) was commissioned as a gift for Shona and Keith. Tye is a trained gun dog, which makes him a delight to photograph in the studio. And when he's not sitting still he's a huge amount of bouncy fun to play with.

Photographing a dark subject against a dark background isn't the easy option (and if asked, my first suggestion to other photographers is "don't"). Done badly, the dark subject isn't lit properly to separate it from the background - in the case of a dog that could result in a pair of eyes (and maybe a pink tongue) on a page of black.

I'm very pleased how well these worked and better still, Shona and Keith are delighted.
