This shot is a by-product of my second test shoot with Lauren where we were experimenting with some lighting variations. This is a classic Hollywood portrait look using stage style lighting rather than studio flash – deep shadows and a very shallow field of focus.
A “test shoot” is really just a collaborative exercise between a photographer and a model (and it can of course include an extended team of makeup artist, stylist, etc.). It’s best considered a development exercise – for me, it’s a way of working with new people, trying new ideas, experimenting and taking risks. Developing and practising a new technique is not something to risk with a client, so my personal work and test shoots allows me to continue to enhance my skills.
It’s not a lighting style that suits everyone, but get in touch if you’d like a portrait like this – even if the Hollywood look isn’t for you we can offer other equally desirable options.
